Levski won the Cup of Bulgaria!March 03, 2014
Levski won the Cup of Bulgaria for season 2013/14. In front of the full Universiada hall in Sofia Levski defeat Cherno More Varna by the score 100-97. The match was exciting from the first to the last second, Levski led almost all the time. However Cherno More had a chance at the end to tie the score but failed to convert from behind the 3-point arc. Levski had options to close out the game long before the end but the pressure was huge and their players made some mistakes. The basketball players of Levski showed a lot of will and desire to win, which allow them to raise their hands high at the end as winners in this year′s Cup of the country. This is the first trophy for the club from 2010 onwards.
Levski started better and managed to get 8 points quickly after excellent play of Nikolay Varbanov under the basket. The center, however, was drawn out of the game with two quick fouls. Cherno More made a few 3-point shots and were able to cut the distance very quickly. Mike Wilkinson made two free throws to push the score up to 4 points in the favor of his team after 10 minutes of play.
At the beginning of the second quarter Levski with strong performances in defense managed to get 7 points advantage, but the visitors responded and even were able to get a single point lead at 39-40, two minutes before the break.
In these minutes the best player of Levski - Brandon Heath made his series of consecutive points, which ended with a basket from the middle of the court to bring the score up to 48-41 at the break. Heath had 16 points in the first half while Cherno More had almost double double performance from his center Milijan Pupovic - 11 points and 8 rebounds.
In the second half Levski equalized the biggest lead of 9 points in their favor but Cherno More always were able to get back in the match and did not allow a large margin. After a technical foul against Levski in the final minutes of the third quarter, the guests again cut the distance to two points. However Levski still hold a 4 points advantage before the last ten minutes - 67-63.
The last part was a real thriller. Guests used each attack to cut the gap while Levski never missed a moment of their leadership. Levski led with eight points after good individual performances of Heath and Chalmers but Cherno More once again got back. The last minute dramatic was so dramatic but with good success from free-throw line Levski managed to please their fans and squeezed the big success. 100-97 final score for Levski.
Undoubtedly the greatest contribution for the success of Levski had Brandon Heath who finished with 31 points and 6 assists. Very strong game for Lionel Chalmers as well - he added 29 points. Jumaine Jones scored 16 points and had 7 rebounds.
For Cherno More Djordje Tresac finished with 20 points, Asen Velikov and Pupovic added 19 apiece.
Trophy of Cup Bulgaria is their 15th in the window of the Basketball club Levski.
Brandon Heath received two individual awards - one for the most assists in the tournament and of course one for MVP of the competition in the "Universiada" hall in Sofia.
